Farm Operations Intern
Squabble State is an agritourism destination on a 68-acre property in Bristol, VA with mountain views of Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina. We draw customers residing in VA, TN, and NC, as well as visitors to the region from across the US and internationally.

Position Description:
The Farm Operations Intern at Squabble State supports the care, maintenance, and continued development of our orchard, farm property, and craft beverage operation. This role is designed for students and emerging professionals seeking hands-on experience in horticulture, agriculture, landscape management, environmental sciences, agribusiness, or related fields.
Interns will work directly on projects that contribute to the growth and improvement of a working orchard and agritourism destination. Responsibilities may vary seasonally but generally include the following:
Assist with orchard maintenance activities including planting, pruning, mulching, mowing, irrigation, and monitoring tree health
Support property maintenance projects including trails, landscaping, outdoor gathering areas, and general groundskeeping
Provide input and research related to landscaping, plant selection, and site planning for new construction and expansion projects
Assist with implementation of landscape improvement projects and long-term property development initiatives
Participate in orchard expansion and agricultural improvement efforts
Support cidery production activities including cleaning, sanitation, ingredient handling, packaging, and other production-related tasks
Conduct research and make recommendations regarding horticulture, land management, sustainability, and agricultural best practices
Operate and maintain tools and equipment safely and responsibly
Assist with seasonal projects and special events as needed
Ideal Candidates:
Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college, university, technical program, or workforce training program related to horticulture, agriculture, environmental science, forestry, landscape design, agribusiness, or a similar field
Interested in gaining real-world experience in agricultural operations and craft beverage production
Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
Self-motivated, curious, and eager to learn
Able to work independently while also collaborating with the Squabble State team
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Other Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old
Able to carry backpack spraying equipment, typically weighing 80 lbs, and empty half barrel kegs, typically ~40 lbs
Comfortable standing, walking, bending, and performing physical work throughout a shift
Reliable transportation to and from Squabble State
Compensation:
This is a paid internship position
Compensation will be offered on an hourly basis and will vary based on experience and educational background
Scheduling:
Part-time position of up to 32 hours per week
Scheduling is flexible and designed to accommodate academic commitments when possible
Most work occurs during daytime hours, with occasional weekend projects or events
